how do I force GPX files not GGZ by lignumaqua - 2013-07-30

Another option, if you always want GPX files, would be to choose a non GGZ capable Garmin GPS, perhaps the Oregon 450. That will work fine with the Oregon 6xx but will always send GPX files.
