Unfortunately this isn't really the way the Garmin units work. The geocache_visits file, and the calendar are both ephemeral and will only show caches as long as nothing else is changed and the old GPX file is still on there. In fact it's recommended to delete the visits file after you've logged caches. If it gets too large it can cause problems and seems prone to getting corrupted. You also may not want to waste geocache space on caches you've already found.
You might consider using the Garmin Export macro which has the option to send your Found caches as POIs to the GPS. That way you can see Found caches on the map and access their data, even though they won't appear in the calendar.
As to Basecamp, with GSAK being so much more powerful, I've never found a use for it and don't even have it installed.
