I agree of course that the decision is up to Kyle.
I also agree that eventually there well be too few virtuals and/or webcams left to be easily attainable, but unlike you, I think that day will not be as soon as you seem to think :-)
My hope is, that by then, new cache types might have appeared (the introduction of Lab Caches to try out new caching ideas at least is an indication that groundspeak is thinking about it) to compensate for this, and as you write, it will be the total of cache types, independent of which types exactly that will count.
That was my reasoning for suggesting to stay at 10, in order to not "dilute" the diamond (and with it the lower) levels of that badge.
On the other hand, lowering the criteria will of course bring me much closer to diamond level, so I don't mind too much Image may be NSFW.
