The Garmin tech lied to you. They often try to blame 3rd party software for their own problems. The Oregon 6xx units all freeze and crash from time to time, no matter where or how the GPX or GGZ files are loaded. I've had it happen many times.
Removing and replacing the batteries usually fixes the problem.
All that having been said, you are quite a long way behind with your GSAK version and you should upgrade anyway (although I doubt it will fix your Oregon issues). At the time of writing 8.3.1.49 is current. The latest patch builds are here.
