Multi selection in the grid is possible and is used in the Publish logs grid for example.
However, the problem is that it requires row mode and not cell mode. That is, the grid must be in a mode where the whole row is highlighted/selected.
This work flow is fine in something like publish logs because we don't need access to the individual cells. However, in the main grid we do need access to the individual cells, so we don't want it stuck in "row mode".
