If I understand you correctly, you don't need a macro for this. Instead:
1) Search>Filter, Custom tab.
2) Select "Equal to" in the drop down for the custom field.
3) Enter the text to search for. Click Go
4) Go to Database>Global Replace, select the custom field you want to update, enter the text to put in that field, and choose "replace".
