I find the same, Chrome used to be the fastest browser for maps, but is now by far the slowest. IE, Safari and Firefox are all much quicker.
I believe the problem is with Chrome, not the macro. Nothing substantive changed in the macro, all that the recent changes added was the ability to choose icons. That has no effect on speed.
Once the map has loaded completely, then Chrome is just as fast again to zoom and move around, it seems to be just the initial load that's very slow. I ran a script audit and it's not the mytopo.com files that are slow (that just happens to be the immediately preceding event) it's the GMaps script itself.
I'll post a query to the Google Maps forum to see if Google is aware of this.
