Sorry, I was probably unclear by using the terms "oldmacro" and "newmacro". But Clyde seems to have understood that I meant to backup the file that is about to be overwritten by the upgrade.
I do see a possible issue that if the backup is performed on every single macro, there could be a considerable buildup of these old copies. Some mechanism would have to be developed to a) only backup when needed and B] remove older backups after some time period. Also, don't include these backups in the larger database/macro/settings backup.
