You may never have known but that does not make it irrelevant. Please tell us how far away the center point for the area you are going to is from your current location. We need to know how far away it is to determine if that is the problem.
As an aside, a GGZ file is just a zipped GPX file with an index. The file type does not affect which waypoints appear on the GPSr assuming you are sending waypoints to a modern Garmin GPSr that knows about GGZ files (which the Montana does).
