For my first tests of this I tried exactly this, but it did not work.

I made a new database, added the custom data field "Awesomeness" (type: integer).

Then I imported a GPX file from opencaching.com but the field is still empty.

I opened the GPX file in the editor, and there it has Awesomeness = 3.0

I just tested again and it worked fine for me.

Attached is the OX cache I tested with. Does that one work for you?

If not then I suspect the problem may be settings related. Please select the database you are loading this cache into and then take the option "Tools=>Send debug info" and let me know the tracking number.

Note: This field is not restricted to Integers so I would define it as real. However, that still should not have prevented this feature from working.
