Thought that was worth checking out, so I disabled Smart Names for my default db, then recopied 6 waypoints across. Result - no difference. If anything, it took even longer for the default grid to appear. When I reset the database properties to the default settings again, the resulting smart name recalculation for the whole database took about 14 seconds.
