There is also the problem that the next iteration of this command is going to override what the user just selected anyway.

It is going to get messy for GSAK to try and second guess what the user wants vs what the macro author has written.
Note that the macro author could put a basic/verbose option on the form and then use the single/multi option accordingly (you just would not be able to switch on the fly)
